Better With Every Wear

  • By Manya Gutgutia

I want to talk about something small. Genuinely small, fits-in-your-palm, easy-to-lose, easy-to-forget.

A Scrunchie.

Specifically, the one that’s been on my wrist for the past three weeks. The one I reach for without looking. The one that’s gathered my hair into a bun at my desk, on a walk, before bed, and approximately forty-seven times in between. I didn’t think I’d have anything to say about a scrunchie. And then I realised I’d been thinking about it more than most things I own that cost ten times as much.

The best materials are the ones that blend into your everyday routine.

That’s the thing about crinkle cotton. It doesn’t perform. It doesn’t slip off your wrist the moment you forget about it, or leave a dent in your hair, or require any of the small adjustments that pull you out of whatever you’re doing. It just… holds. Gently. Reliably. Without making a fuss.

There’s a whole category of things like this, objects that earn their place seamlessly. A good pen. A well-worn tote. A mug that fits your hand just right. They don’t ask to be noticed. They’re just there, doing exactly what they’re supposed to do, and over time you realise you’d genuinely miss them if they were gone.

CRINKLE SCRUNCHIE IN ESPRESSO

The akiiko Crinkle Cotton Scrunchies landed in that category for me faster than expected. The fabric is light and breathable, familiar in the way that good cotton always is, like something that’s been washed a hundred times even when it’s new. And it gets better. Softer. More itself, each time you wear it.

I know “it gets better with wear” is a thing people say about expensive leather goods and heritage denim. It feels a little ridiculous to say it about a hair tie. And yet, I think it holds true.

Here’s what I keep coming back to: comfort isn’t always about luxury. Sometimes it’s just about something doing its job so well that you stop thinking about it entirely. That’s a harder thing to make than it sounds. Softness that doesn’t fade with the morning. That stays the whole day through.

CHANTILLY SCRUNCHIES

If you’re after something softer, skinnier, the Chantilly Scrunchies are worth a look too -a different feel, same attention to detail, same material. Both come in multipacks, which feels right. These are the kind of things you’ll want more than one of.

Anyway, that's my case for taking the small things seriously. They add up.

My favourites:
