I want to talk about something small. Genuinely small, fits-in-your-palm, easy-to-lose, easy-to-forget.
A Scrunchie.
Specifically, the one that’s been on my wrist for the past three weeks. The one I reach for without looking. There’s a whole category of things like this, objects that earn their place seamlessly. A good pen. A well-worn tote. A mug that fits your hand just right. They don’t ask to be noticed. They’re just there, doing exactly what they’re supposed to do, and over time you realise you’d genuinely miss them if they were gone.

The fabric is light and breathable, familiar in the way that good cotton always is, like something that’s been washed a hundred times even when it’s new. And it gets better. Softer. I know “it gets better with wear” is a thing people say about expensive leather goods and heritage denim. It feels a little ridiculous to say it about a hair tie. And yet, I think it holds true.
